Father Arrested for Theft After Taking Daughter’s Cell Phone as Punishment

As punishment for sending an inappropriate texts, a 12-year-old’s father in Texas took her cell phone away, but her mother wasn’t in agreement with that course of action so she filed charges with the police claiming theft in 2013.

Ronald Jackson, 36, was arrested after refusing to return his estranged daughter’s iPhone when police showed up at his door demanding he return the stolen property. According to WFAA.com, the estranged father refused and decided the police would not dictate his parental rights.

He was sent a citation in the mail charging him with a Class C misdemeanor of theft of property between $50 to $500. When he refused to take a plea deal, he hired a lawyer and took the matter to trial. The prosecutor then charged him with a harsher offense, a Class B misdemeanor.

After three years, the case was brought to trial this week and Dallas jurors found him not guilty. Luckily he had his day in court, but the ordeal further damaged his relationship with his now 15-year-old daughter who testified against him.

According to WFAA.com, Jackson’s attorney plans to file a federal complaint against the Grand Prairie Police Department and the city attorney’s office. His daughter’s mother was married to a police officer in the department, hence they are claiming discrimination.
