A Florida couple celebrated their 61st anniversary with their annual tradition of eating their original wedding cake. The first word that comes to mind is Eww!, but the couple says the cake is still edible and tasty.

Ann and Ken Fredericks married August 19, 1955 and the top tier of the wedding cake was a fruit cake made from her grandmother’s recipe with brandy as one of the ingredients. Ann claims the alcohol has preserved the cake which they take a bite out of every year.

Ann tells ABC News they don’t refrigerate or freeze it, but preserve it with plastic wrap stored in a tin can. The tradition includes pouring brandy over it to moisten it before feeding it to each other. The couple jokes the cake may outlive them.

‘“We’re beginning to think we may outlive the tradition, she told ABC News. “I’m 82 and my husband is 86 and this year was our 61st wedding anniversary. The cake is only like 3 inches by 4 inches, what we have left of it. So we both enjoyed a very small piece. I’m torn between eating and having it over with or making it last. And then we said, ‘You know, it would be fun if we outlive it.’ That would be a goal for us.”

Should everyone follow that tradition?
